Initiates circle Initiates to the Rogue - Who & what is the rogue?

Who is the Rogue? A politically correct character thrown in by Blizzard to offset the testosterone filled genre? A wimpy female character that is there only for the sake of eye candy? No. If you have ever played the rogue you realize very quickly how hard it is to survive as her in the beginning. Unlike the warrior and sorcerer, the rogue is at the disadvantage to begin with when confronted with close quarter fighting and that is what Diablo is about. Fighting to survive on your way down to Hell.

The Rogue is one of the Sisters of the Sightless Eye - a woman who has a sixth sense that identifies and disarms traps. She is a devastating fighter when using the bow. Her ability with the bow is merciless when wielded properly and kicking ass is what being a rogue is all about. She may not release spells as fast as the mage or sustain damage like the warrior but who needs to when, if you are a smart player, you can stand back and massacre demons from a distance. Her precision with the bow is uncanny and no one can match her.

The Basics

Sister of the Sightless Eye created by CaptKickAss - thank you for the lovely pic hon...you did a great jobWhen playing the rogue the most important attribute you can use is your dexterity. This will enable you to use the bow with greater accuracy (more dexterity = greater to hit points). The next important factor is magic. Unlike the warrior the rogue can use magic effectively but not on the same level as the mage. A few good spells, like chain lightning - stone curse - mana shield (very important when starting out) - teleport - and fireball, can mean the difference between clearing a level and dying on that level. Strength is also important. Without a higher strength, you can't use some of the more devastating bows out there so alternate your points between magic and strength when you have your dexterity high enough to use a bow efficiently. Finally vitality. Without it you would not be able to withstand any attacks that come your way.

Attributes Maximum Amount Attainable
Strength 55
Magic 70
Dexterity 250
Vitality 80

The Bow

Since the bow is an important part of being a rogue there are a few tricks you should know. When firing, use the shift key to stay in one position. You can highlight a demon, press shift, and then fire your arrows - which will focus on that demon only. This stops you from approaching it and keeps you bound to your spot. By alternating your holding and releasing of the shift key you can realign your sights and stop your rogue from rushing into a swarm of evil while killing those that approach effectively.

When picking out a bow make sure that its damage and to hit percentage are better than what you already have. The better the bow the better the stats. When starting out you could be faced with a bow that either adds a percentage to your stats or a bow that applies a flat rate. Since your stats are small in the beginning it is far greater to get an instant boost from the flat rate then a negligible percentage increase to negligible stats.

When it comes to armour, weapons, and shields the best is not always the best. As a Rogue you tend to be excluded from the real heavy armour and weapons because of strength limits. A rogue using a Giant axe is NEVER as effective as the warrior because you can't use it as quickly as the warrior can. Sticking to a sword and shield is better and there are some out there that really do help you out when you fell the need to just hack & slash for a while. The Stormshield is a perfect shield for the rogue that helps greatly in deflect abilities while any sword, except those that are two handed, with magical properties will suit the rogue well. These can help a rogue tremendously when not playing with a bow BUT stick to the bow until you are at a good level of experience and can survive one-on-one confrontations.
