Tristram is where you start your journey. It is a town ravaged by the events that have led up to the release of Diablo's spirit. When you are in town you will come across many townsfolk that have refused to leave and who can offer you sage advice for survival. They are interspersed around the canter of Tristram, except Adria and Wirt who are on opposite ends away from the town. Each person will help you understand what you need to accomplish yet a few will also offer something of value to you. It is those few that you will visit on a regular basis but do not forget those that only offer advice. That advice can sometimes mean the difference between surviving and dying.

Who is who? |
 |
Cain, the town Elder
Cain stands by the town's fountain and advises you about the hidden capabilities on unidentified magical items. If you don't have an ID scroll then this the person to see who will charge 100 gold to ID the item you have. Always ID items before selling them. You will get much more gold for a known item then an unknown one.
Griswold, the Blacksmith
Griswold stores all weapons & armour at his shop and is the only place to buy those materials. He also can repair items for a price where non-magical items will be much cheaper to repair then magical ones. Finally, he is the only one to sell your excess weapons & armour to and will pay you much less then what it would cost to buy from him. But that is the price of being a stranger in Tristram.
Adria, the Witch
Adria is situated southeast, across the stream, from the town and is the only one to obtain mana potions from. She also offers magical items for sale - potions, scrolls, books, & staffs and has the ability to recharge your staves of their magical attributes for a fair price. If you have a staff to sell she will be the only one to offer you any gold for it, thus she is a very valuable resource to visit regularly.
Pepin, the Healer
Pepin offers not only free advice but also will heal you to full strength for no charge. He too sells items but of a healing nature. He is the only one to buy resurrection scrolls from and is a must see when playing multiplayer. He is also the only one to buy healing scrolls and potions from and like Adria, he also offers rejuvenation potions in both strengths.
Wirt, the peg-legged boy
Wirt is the only one to survive an actual attack by one of Diablo's denizens. The loss of his leg was the outcome but he continues on by finding and selling unusual magical items that might not otherwise be found by you. The only problem is that he will charge you 50 gold pieces just to look at the single item he is carrying. Whether you buy it or not you will lose the 50 gold.
Ogden, the Tavern Owner
Ogden can only offer advice and a warm place to rest at his tavern. He is usually a great source of information when you are questing and is the key to continuing many of the quests. As a multiplayer character, he only offers advice on what expect when heading down below town but sometimes that advice can and does make a difference if you follow it. Listen to his stories for clues on where to go if you are stuck.
Gillian, the Barmaid
Gillian works at Ogden's tavern and has a small house just behind it. This is where you will find her and where you can go either for some history on what happened to Tristram or advice on how to survive down below town. As a bit player she isn't necessary except for one quest yet she does serve a mildly amusing purpose.
Farnham, the Town Drunk
Farnham hides on the far western side of town drinking his life away. Though he is incomprehensible most of the time he has seen much and can fill in the back story of what has happened that other townsfolk have initiated. Except for that he is pretty useless as a character and is only useful when you are questing in single player mode.
Dead Soldier
At the entrance of the Church you will find a dying soldier. His only purpose is to inform you of what to expect when you first enter the dungeons of the church and to start your first quest when doing single play. Once he has told his story he dies and has no more use, except possibly as good bait for bringing out the demons down in the dungeons.
