One operative's story As the cold winter air whipped through their hair those that understood the importance of the momentous event never moved, never breathed till the simulation was over. For those that created it, the dead calm of reserve sat in their breasts as they prayed that it would succeed. Never before had someone created the perfect assassin...till now. "All systems nominal. Sim sequence complete in minus 30 seconds," a distorted voice announced to all over the intercom system. A hush fell over the landscape, as all was silent. A sharp sound was heard from the trailer to the left and then nothing. A thin black acrid trail of smoke slowly escaped from an open window while the staccato sound echoed in the canyon concluding today's sim. "Well lets see what we have," Stephen announced while moving towards the trailer, his long, confident stride reaching its door before anyone else could move. He slowly reached towards the door when to the right came a shout. "Stephen, wait!" A young woman ran towards the trailer and laid her hand on his, "The sim isn't complete. Don't touch the handle till I've stopped the AI's program." Stephen stepped back eyeing the small woman before him. "You didn't turn that damn thing off?" he seethed as the young woman recoiled at his obvious displeasure. Looking around he found the second subject moving into position just beyond the trailer. Stepping back he moved away from the trailer while the girl followed. "I never had a chance with you marching up there so damn quick. It takes time to start up the shutdown sequence. I haven't had the time to program the automatic shutdown since you wanted the sim to go on schedule. These things take time and patience." "Chariss, when will you learn that I don't accept explanations, only results." Stephen quickly backhanded Chariss' face, which sent her sprawling to the dirt. The look of betrayal and shock registering immediately only to be replaced by a look of resignation. "I promise that it will be complete by the deadline but I can't afford to be out here watching these sims when I could be back at the lab finishing the programming." Stephen looked down at her as a slow, evil smile stretched on his face. "I'm sorry I ever doubted you. You know what's best in this matter. Just make sure it is done." Chariss slowly got up and dusted herself off. "As you wish." |
